Whitewater Academy Elementary opened in the fall of 2008. It is a single-floor facility totaling 79,278 square feet. It has seven roof-top air conditioning units, two condensing boilers, and variable air volume (VAV) terminal units in most of the building. Two roof-top units are constant volume.
The facility was designed to meet energy codes. Classroom wings are oriented on a north-south axis to take advantage of daylight. Three windows per classroom let in natural light, and fixed transoms enhance the light. Fluorescent fixtures were used throughout the facility--T-8 bulbs with dual switching between inboard and outboard bulbs.
The school has reduced its energy use by 16.3 percent since its first year. As we became more familiar with the building, we made minor adjustments in the operational hours. We also talked to staff and students about ways they can help conserve energy without hurting the functioning of the school. The winter of 2009-2010 was unusually cold, so we are hoping to reduce energy use even more during a typical winter.
We continue to strive to raise energy consumption awareness and to use that awareness to improve energy efficiency.
