Wayne Trail Elementary is one of six schools in the Maumee City School district to be awarded the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance. Using a computer, our lighting panels can be quickly modified to accommodate activities in minutes. After school, the lights in the hallways are reduced to one every four fixtures to minimize usage. The gym has 16 400-watt fixtures, but only eight need to be on for most activities. In the winter months, the temperature of the primary loop for the boilers is set at 160 degrees and the secondary loop is set to 140 degrees. These temperatures have been lowered at least 30 degrees from the original installation. Also, the boilers are turned off during weekends. Our efforts to reduce costs and consumption have been done with our staff only. In addition to this, students are educated on composting, litter prevention, and reducing the amount of landfill space by stacking disposable lunch trays and folding milk cartons.
