Goldsboro High School
901 E. Beech St
Goldsboro, NC 27530
Built in 1926, Goldsboro High School serves approximately 540 9th through 12th grade students and has undergone numerous renovations and building additions over the past several decades.
In 2003, Wayne County Public Schools entered into a strategic partnership with Energy Education Inc., an energy conservation consulting firm, to implement energy saving measures. An energy manager was hired to head the schools energy conservation efforts. Through building energy audits, the team identified several energy saving measures.
In 2005, the lighting throughout the school was upgraded to T-8 fixtures, and the lighting in the gym was upgraded to T-5 fixtures. All incandescent bulbs were replaced with more energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. Plumbing valves were replaced to reduce the amount of water used per flush, and in 2006, a new chiller was installed for the auditorium.
The equipment upgrades were made available through a performance contract that was overseen by the school's Maintenance Department and Trane Corporation. Through routine preventative maintenance, the Maintenance Department has been able to ensure that all filters are changed on a regular basis as well as ensuring that all lighting and time clocks are working properly. These routine maintenance strategies enable the school to monitor and quickly remedy any inefficiencies that may occur.
Not only has Goldsboro High School increased its energy savings though building upgrades, it has also addressed the potential savings that can be met through behavioral changes. The team has educated its staff on more energy-efficient ways they can operate their classrooms while maintaining the comfort and learning experience of their students.
By both improving equipment efficiency and involving the building occupants in energy saving efforts, Goldsboro High School earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.
