Opened in May 2006, 7 World Trade Center is the first commercial office building in New York City to be certified Gold under the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC's) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system. The 52-story office building was developed by Silverstein Properties and is also owned and managed by the firm. It is one of the first projects accepted to be part of USGBC's Pilot Program for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - Core and Shell Development (LEED-CS).
As part of the design and construction of the building, special emphasis was placed on energy-saving equipment and operations. These include a building-wide, comprehensive energy management system, premium efficiency motors, and variable frequency drives (VFDs) on all systems and water-cooled, self-contained air conditioners for tenant spaces. Silverstein Properties continues to investigate additional opportunities and technologies to improve energy performance.
