First Colonial High School?home of the Patriots? was constructed in 1966 and includes approximately 178,000 square feet of space. The mission of First Colonial High School is to ensure that students are engaged in an innovative, rigorous learning environment while integrating academics with life skills enabling them to reach the achievement and respect necessary for post-secondary success. Currently, the school teaches approximately 1,950 students and employs approximately 200 staff members. Included in the school is a Legal Studies Academy, created to provide students who have an interest in the law, law-related fields, and legal and ethical issues the opportunity to extend their knowledge beyond the typical high-school program. In 2010, with assistance from an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, the school division worked with energy performance contractor Noresco to replace the facility?s lighting with more energy-efficient fixtures, install lighting occupancy sensors, and implement water saving measures.
