Williams Elementary School
892 Newtown Rd
Virginia Beach, VA 23462
Built in 1961, Williams Elementary School was named and dedicated in honor of Bettie Forbes Williams (1900-1962), a teacher in Princess Anne County for 24 years and Supervisor of Negro Elementary Schools. Home to the unique and diverse tri-campus complex (which includes a 2010 ENERGY STAR certified building, Diamond Springs Elementary), the legacy of this great educator lives on in a 77,000-square-foot building in which fourth- and fifth-grade students are prepared for the challenges of middle school. Designed to improve student achievement in an area with Title I schools, Williams Elementary School serves more than 430 students and 90 staff members. This is done by offering a highly focused instructional program at each school that is designed to meet the developmental needs of the students in the tri-campus community. In 2010, with assistance from an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, the school division worked with an energy performance contractor, Noresco, to replace the lighting with more energy efficient fixtures and install lighting occupancy sensors.
?Enhanced lighting has improved the overall atmosphere of our school. From the hallways, to the cafeteria, the classrooms, and the gym ? everything is bright and cheerful. It makes an old building come alive!?-- George MacKay, Principal (Retired), VBCPS
