Elm Road Elementary School, located in Mishawaka, Indiana, serves approximately 450 elementary students in the southern end of the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation. Built in 1953, the more than 64,400-square-foot building was remodeled in 1987.

In 2007, the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation partnered with Cenergistic to create a people-based energy conservation program that emphasizes changing the habits of building occupants. Through the efforts of more than 30 dedicated staff members, the energy savings at Elm Road have consistently been around 25 percent each year.

The control of HVAC equipment at Elm Road is done using a combination of an energy management systems and thermostat control. Committed staff members set back room thermostats and control light through the intelligent use of windows and blinds. The energy management system turns off air handling equipment and does some security light controlling, which gives the building an excellent night set back. There have also been some improvements in equipment. Approximately 160 outdated computers have been replaced with units that have energy-efficient power supplies and flat screen monitors. All of these improvements combined have helped Elm Road Elementary School to earn the ENERGY STAR.
