Elsie Rogers Elementary School, located in Mishawaka, Indiana, serves approximately 300 elementary students in middle-most portion of the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation. The 57,500-square-foot building was built in 1954 and was remodeled in 1982.

In 2007, the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation partnered with Energy Education Inc. to create a people-based energy conservation program that emphasizes changing the habits of building occupants. Through the efforts of more than 30 dedicated staff members, the energy savings at Elsie Rogers have increased from 26 percent during the first year of the program to 38 percent in 2011.

Elsie Rogers does not employ an Energy Management System (EMS) to control the HVAC equipment for time-of-day schedules, like most of the Penn Harris Madison buildings. Committed staff members set back room thermostats, turn off air-handling equipment, control lights, and manage their room environment through the intelligent use of windows and blinds. There have also been some improvements in equipment. Outdated computers (approximately 110) have been replaced with units that have energy efficient power supplies and flat-screen monitors. All of these practices have helped Elsie Rogers Elementary School to earn the ENERGY STAR.
