Shortridge High School, formerly the Indianapolis High School, is the oldest high school in the state of Indiana. Opened in 1864, Shortridge served as a high school on the near north side of Indianapolis until 1981, when it was closed due to budgetary cutbacks. Due to mounting pressure from the community, the Indianapolis Public School System reopened Shortridge as a Middle School in 1984, where it continued until the spring of 2009.

In the fall of 2009, the school re-opened its doors to high school students under the name of Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy, serving 6th through 12th grade students, with its first class to graduate in 2012.

Shortridge has graduated some of the most important thinkers and leaders of the 20th century over its nearly 150 year existence, including:
-- Writer Kurt Vonnegut
-- Congressman Andy Jacobs Jr.
-- Senator Richard Lugar
-- Admiral Raymond A. Spruance
-- Writer Madelyn Pugh
-- Composer Easley Blackwood
-- Scholar Mary Ritter Beard

In 2006-2008, a renovation project was completed to make numerous facility improvements including HVAC, security, ADA requirements, roof, new ceilings and lights, and additional restrooms. Improvements to educational spaces include science labs, distance learning, and vocational spaces. The Program Management team for the project was Schmidt Associates, Inc., the Design teams were Mussett Nicholas & Associates, Inc. and Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc., the Design Consultant was Brenner Design, the Design Consultant ? Civil was Charlier Clark & Linard, PC, and the CM team was Shiel Sexton Company, Inc./Corbitt & Sons Company, Inc.

Completed in December 2008, the construction cost was $16,158,592.
