Dundee Ridge Middle School
5555 Lk Trask Rd
Dundee, FL 33838
Dundee Ridge Middle School was opened during the 1998-1999 school year. Serving more than
1,100 students in grades 6-8, Dundee Ridge Middle School envisions itself as a creative learning center of excellence, where students are encouraged to explore and master a broad spectrum of subjects and teachers are empowered to be engineers for exploration and learning. The staff joins in this function by keeping channels of communication open, while parents are mobilized to be supportive participants in this process. Moreover, it strives to provide a healthy and nurturing environment for all.
In 1992 the School Board of Polk County partnered with Energy Education Inc. to start an energy management program, resulting in a much more energy efficient building design for Dundee Ridge Middle compared to schools built prior to 1992. In evaluating past building practices, individual HVAC units were found to be more efficient than chiller systems, and therefore Dundee Ridge Middle was equipped with these individual units. Thermostats with 4-hour twist timers were installed in each classroom to allow teachers individual control of their HVAC unit to provide comfort while ensuring that when the classroom was not occupied the system was off. The following energy saving features were also installed during the construction phase: time clocks on boilers and circulating pumps, exhaust fans, water coolers, large area air conditioning units, and outside lighting; T-8 lamps and fixtures; increased insulation; and low-flow faucets, toilets, and urinals.
In 2008, the Polk County school district partnered with ENERGY STAR and entered energy data for the 2007-2008 school year. Using the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool, a baseline rating of 99 was returned for Dundee Ridge Middle School. Through active participation of staff and students in energy conservation, the school was able to improve its rating to 100 in 2009.
