The beginnings of the Charlotte bakery can be traced back to 1916, when Mr. Rex Callicott started baking and selling cookies in Washington D.C. The bakery in Charlotte was built in 1946.  After decades of acquisitions and mergers the Keebler Co. acquired the bakery in 1998, and soon after, the Kellogg Company acquired Keebler. The Charlotte Bakery produces 55 active SKU?s of cookies under the following brand names:  Murray, Jack?s, Jackson, Keebler, Famous Amos, Austin, and Mothers.

Kellogg Charlotte has made many improvements in their infrastructure to reduce the use of energy from electricity, gas, and water. The Charlotte Bakery follows a comprehensive energy management program.  Under this program the bakery has progressively applied good energy practices, including goal setting, energy benchmarking, and energy tracking.

Savings on water use have improved drastically by changing cleaning methods.  The previous cleaning method used ~240 gallons of water per hour where the new steam cleaning method uses ~6 gallons of water per hour.  Low flow aerators on all faucets in the bakery and the warehouse were also installed.

Additional savings on electricity use was achieved by installing photo eyes in all office space to turn off lighting in rooms not in use.  Finally, the P.M. program and HVAC units were improved maximizing efficiency.

Overall Kellogg Charlotte has reduced energy intensity by 7% from a 2005 baseline number.


2010 was the first year that the Charlotte Bakery earned ENERGY STAR certification.
