The CEMEX Brooksville South Cement Plant has continuously produced Portland cement in Brooksville, FL since shipments began in 1986, and has been mining limestone on this site since the 1920?s.  After an extensive expansion in 2008, the CEMEX Brooksville South plant has a permitted production capacity of 2.17 million tons of cement per year.  The plant employs about 104 men and women, providing a payroll of more than $8 million to the local community.  2012 is the first year CEMEX Brooksville South plant earned the ENERGY STAR plant certification.


CEMEX has continually strived to make a difference in the Brooksville, FL area by being the best neighbor it can be through its direct and indirect economic contributions, volunteerism, and commitment to the environment.  It has made investments in technology to reduce energy consumption and to reduce its? overall environmental impact including a reduction in the carbon footprint of the facility.


CEMEX has a company-wide Energy Management Program based on the ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management.  Under this program, the Brooksville South cement plant has a Site Energy Team which helps the plant progressively apply good energy practices promoted by ENERGY STAR.  


Energy conservation efforts of the plant include:

?     Improving energy efficiency through more utilization of the new large vertical finish mill.

?     Installation of a multi-fuel alternative fuel handling system and automation of the tire injection machine to burn up to 59% alternative fuels.

?     Addition of limestone and baghouse dust into cement to decrease the clinker/cement factor.

?     Improving thermal energy efficiency of kiln operation through process optimization.


As a result of the above-mentioned energy conservation measures, the plant has substantially lowered its specific heat consumption and specific electric power consumption in 2011 compared with 2009, and conserved 171,000 MMBtu in thermal energy and 7,600 MWH of electric power.


The plant consumed over 8,100 tons of used tires and tire fluff and 1,500 tons of wood and agricultural waste in 2011.  The use of these alternative fuels conserves natural resources for the future.
