The ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Refinery was built in 1909 on a former 225 acre cotton field with a capacity of 1,800 barrel per day by the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey.  The refinery, which has been expanded numerous times, is currently the second largest refinery in the United States with a capacity of over 500,000 barrels per day.  The Refinery employs over 2,300 employees and contractors and is fully integrated with the adjacent ExxonMobil world scale chemical plant.  The refinery produces more than three hundred products, including gasoline, diesel fuels, jet fuel, aviation fuel, lubricating oils, waxes, petroleum coke, and chemical feedstocks.

In 2000, ExxonMobil Corporation developed its Global Energy Management System (G-EMS) to focus on conserving energy.  Since then, the Baton Rouge Refinery has implemented numerous elements of the G-EMS system such as heat exchanger monitoring and cleaning, a steam trap and steam leak repair programs, and furnace air pre-heater upgrades to generate energy savings. 

The ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Refinery was first awarded the ENERGY STAR for plants in 2007.  Overall, the Baton Rouge Refinery has reduced energy intensity by 10% from 2000 to 2007.  This has created enough energy savings to supply 120,000 U.S. households and 310,000 people with energy each year.
