The Merck Healthcare Products plant, formerly owned by Schering-Plough Corporation, was built in 1979 as a Dr. Scholl's foot care manufacturing and distribution site. Since that time, a full line of Coppertone skincare products and Dr. Scholl's foot care products are now manufactured at the site. Additionally, the site packages over-the-counter (OTC) products, including Coricidin and Correctol.
During the last 10 years, numerous capital improvements have been made to reduce energy consumption; including an energy efficient roof, a plant-wide lighting system upgrade, numerous HVAC unit replacements, and a new compressed air generation system. Additionally, the site has optimized the use of utilities by tuning of the chillers and boilers, as well as upgrading the cooling towers. In total, there was a $200,000 savings resulting from the roofing and air handlers upgrades and a savings of $100,000 as a result of the electrical re-lamping projects throughout the facility. In recent years, the site has partnered with the corporate energy group to identify ongoing projects and enhancements to further reduce energy consumption.
This plant was first awarded the ENERGY STAR in 2008 under the ownership of Schering-Plough, and was one of the first four pharmaceutical sites nationwide to receive that honor. Working closely with the corporate energy group, additional projects, including a warehouse lighting upgrade, will be scheduled for implementation.
