The refinery was first awarded the ENERGY STAR in 2007.
In 2002, the Detroit refinery began developing a more comprehensive energy conservation program in conjunction with Marathon's corporate commitment to improve energy efficiency by 10 percent in 10 years. In addition to a 2005 expansion that involved the installation of more energy efficient equipment, the Detroit refinery has focused on reducing consumption through improved operating and maintenance practices. These include such practices as steam trap monitoring and repair programs, insulation studies and repairs, proper electric motor versus steam turbine operation, heater excess oxygen optimization and heat exchanger monitoring and cleaning. Savings from these practices account for annual energy reductions of 300,000 MMBTU per year.
