The Billings Refinery is located near the Yellowstone River and is a few blocks from downtown Billings, the largest city in Montana. The petroleum refinery became operational in October 1949 with a crude throughput capacity of 7,500 barrels per day.  After expansion projects over the years, the refinery is now rated at 58,000 barrels per day and manufactures a full slate of petroleum products.  The plant also directly employs nearly 300 people in a full spectrum of business occupations ranging from plant operations and maintenance jobs to engineering and management positions.

The Billings Refinery has applied good energy practices promoted by ENERGY STAR including energy benchmarking and tracking, installing extensive integrated heat recovery systems throughout the refinery, maintaining a steam trap performance program (i.e., recover hot water for reuse), and focusing on reliable and stable operation.

The Billings Refinery first received the ENERGY STAR in 2006, and was the first petroleum refinery to receive the label.
