The CEMEX Wampum plant successfully completed an environmental restoration project creating wetlands and re-establishing the ecosystem in the area of its completed quarry. Using high-tech grading systems, the area was developed by planting tree seedlings, vegetation, doing wild life habitat enhancements and stocking with aquatic life including crayfish, snails, tadpoles, and over 4,000 fish. These exemplary reclamation efforts demonstrate CEMEX's commitment to land stewardship.
CEMEX has a company wide Energy Management Program based on the ENERGY STAR guidelines. Under this program, the Wampum plant has a Site Energy Team which helps the plant progressively apply good energy practices promoted by ENERGY STAR.
The Wampum Plant was able to reduce its fuel consumption by about 13% during 2007 by using alternative fuels. Overall heat consumption reduced by 90,000 MMBTU and specific heat consumption reduced by 2.25%, which represents a reduction of 8,000 tons/year of Green House gases. This saved energy is sufficient to provide electricity to 2,500 US households for a year.
