CEMEX Kosmos Company has continuously produced Portland and Masonry cements at Kosmosdale in Louisville, Ky. since the first shipments began in cloth bags in 1905.  In 103 years, the plant has survived a fire that destroyed the plant in 1908, the Great Depression, a flood in 1937 and two world wars. CEMEX Kosmos Cement Company is the only cement plant in Kentucky and has a production design capacity of 1.6 million short tons of cement per year.  The plant employs about 150 local men and women, providing a payroll of more than $12 million to the Commonwealth. The Plant Team is proud to be one of the industrial foundations of Louisville and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. CEMEX Kosmos has earned the ENERGY STAR for two consecutive years: 2007 and 2008.

 

For the last 100-plus years, Kosmos has continually strived to make a difference in the Louisville-Metro area by being the best neighbor it can be through its direct and indirect economic contributions, volunteerism and commitment to the environment. It has made investments in technology to reduce energy and environmental impacts,

 

CEMEX has a company-wide Energy Management Program based on the ENERGY STAR guidelines.  Under this program, the CEMEX Kosmos cement plant in Louisville has a Site Energy Team which helps the plant progressively apply good energy practices promoted by ENERGY STAR.  

 

Energy conservation efforts of the plant include:

 

        Installation of  two variable speed drives for Cooler Fans

        New higher efficiency motor for major cement mill dust collector

        New soft start for small cement finish mill

        Improving energy efficiency of our large in-line raw mills

        Lighting upgrades

        Correction of power factor of equipment

 

As a result of the above-mentioned energy conservation measures, the plant has been able to save 74,000 MMBTU of thermal energy and 2,200 MWh of electrical energy.
