Marathon Petroleum Company’s (MPC’s) refinery in Robinson, Ill., located in the east central part of the state, is one of seven refining centers operated by the company. The Robinson refinery has a crude oil refining capacity of 212,000 barrels per calendar day. The plant began as the Lincoln Oil and Refining Company, a processor of local crudes in the early 1900s. The company was purchased by the Ohio Oil Company, a predecessor of MPC, in 1924. The Robinson refinery produces a full range of commercial, industrial and retail products, transportation fuels, and petroleum coke. It is connected to extensive pipeline systems.
The Robinson refinery received its first ENERGY STAR certification in 2014. This was accomplished through proactive improvements made as a result of a comprehensive energy assessment process developed by MPC. Dedicated teams highlighted daily process operating targets and projects for energy efficiency. Projects included changes in piping and insulation systems, steam system maintenance, fired equipment tuning, process steam reduction, and conversion of steam turbines to more efficient electric drivers.
MPC’s Robinson refinery proudly joins four other MPC refining facilities as having earned ENERGY STAR certifications. MPC has been an ENERGY STAR partner since 2009.
