New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc., or NUMMI, was founded in 1984 as the result of a historic alliance between two automobile manufacturers, Toyota and General Motors.  It is built on the fundamental set of cornerstones allowing for individual contribution and involvement through teamwork.

 

The venture provided opportunities for Toyota to test the ability to use its production methods in an American setting and for GM to learn how to build cars more efficiently using Toyota's "lean" production system.  The initial focus was on manufacturing a small, high-quality car.

 

NUMMI is a consolidated automobile assembly plant with full stamping, weld, plastics, paint and assembly shops all located on site.  NUMMI presently consists of two assembly lines, one for passenger cars and one for small pickup trucks, and is the only remaining automobile assembly plant in California.  It currently produces the Tacoma small truck and the Corolla for Toyota and the Pontiac Vibe for GM.

 

NUMMI is part of the Toyota Engineering and Motor Manufacturing North America (TEMA) energy program.  TEMA has a comprehensive energy management program with aggressive energy reduction targets.  NUMMI is a very active participant and applies best energy practices promoted by TEMA and ENERGY STAR.  Benchmarking activities with other TEMA manufacturing plants, goal setting and energy tracking have allowed NUMMI to consistently reduce its energy consumption per vehicle since 2002.

 

NUMMI first earned the ENERGY STAR in 2006.  NUMMI's successful application of ENERGY STAR principles has reduced its energy intensity for both its passenger car and truck line each year from 2004 to 2008.
