The Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health Elkhorn, Nebraska facility is a science and innovation driven biotechnology operations facility. The facility has a fully integrated operation with multi-disciplinary science teams including Research & Development, Discovery Technology, Regulatory Affairs, Process Development, Biotechnology Manufacture, Quality Control, and other business support functions. Acquired by Schering-Plough Corporation in 1979 and part of Merck MMD since 2009, this facility is located west of downtown Omaha, Nebraska.  The facility produces animal health biological products.

 

The Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health Elkhorn facility has worked to reduce energy consumption through a number of energy efficiency projects within the last five years.  These projects include the installation of reverse osmosis unit systems for the steam boilers, installation of a high efficient modulating burner in an 80-hp boiler, installation of motion sensors in labs and offices, replacement of 10 old air handling units with high efficient ones, replacement of 2 old technology VFD pumps in chilled water system, and replacement of the 19-year old incinerator.  Additionally, the facility has instituted a turn-off light program. 

 

The overall RO units' systems projects have an average energy savings of $44,000 per year while the high efficient modulating burner replacement project resulted in 30% emissions reduction.

 

Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health Elkhorn facility earned the ENERGY STAR for the first time in 2009.
