The CEMEX Miami Cement Plant has continuously produced Portland and Masonry cements in Miami, FL since the first shipments began in 1958 under Lehigh Portland Cement Co. The plant was converted from a wet process to a modern, more efficient dry process design in 2000. The plant modernization increased the annual cement production from 800,000 tons to 1.2 million tons with a large reduction in energy consumption. The CEMEX Miami plant employs about 125 local men and women. The Plant Team is proud to have earned the ENERGY STAR for the first time in 2011.
The Miami plant continually strives to make a difference in its commitment to the environment. It continues to ?go green? with increasing the consumption of alternative fuels and raw materials to reduce its carbon footprint.
CEMEX has a company-wide Energy Management Program based on the ENERGY
? Installation of variable speed drives for clinker cooler fans
? Installation of kiln shell cooling fans in place of compressed air
? Replacement of compressed air operated vibrators with more efficient electric ones
? Maintained grinding media in grinding mills for optimal power consumption
? Lighting upgrades throughout the plant and office spaces
? Replacement of motors with new high efficiency ones
As a result of the above-mentioned energy conservation measures, the plant has been able to save 78,800 mmBTU in thermal energy and 3,900 MWh in electrical energy.
