The CEMEX Balcones Cement Plant has continuously produced Portland cement in New Braunfels, TX since shipments began in November 1980.  After an extensive expansion in 2008, the CEMEX Balcones plant has a production design capacity of 2.5 million tons of cement per year.  The plant employs about 117 men and women, providing a payroll of more than $10 million to the local community.  2011 is the first year CEMEX Balcones plant earned the ENERGY STAR.


For the last 32-plus years, the Balcones plant has continually strived to make a difference in the New Braunfels area by being the best neighbor it can be through its direct and indirect economic contributions, volunteerism, and commitment to the environment.  It has made investments in technology to reduce energy and environmental impacts.


CEMEX has a company-wide Energy Management Program based on the ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management.  Under this program, the CEMEX Balcones cement plant in New Braunfels has a Site Energy Team which helps the plant progressively apply good energy practices promoted by ENERGY STAR.  


Energy conservation efforts of the plant include:

?         Improving energy efficiency through more utilization of the new large vertical finish mill

?         Installation of a multi-fuel handling system and automation of the tire injection

          machine to burn up to 40% alternative fuels

?         Refurbishment of a limestone additive system to decrease clinker factor

?         Improving thermal energy efficiency of kiln line 1 through process optimization


As a result of the above-mentioned energy conservation measures, the plant has conserved over 8,800 MMBtu in thermal energy and reduced electrical energy consumption by 3%.  The plant has also conserved natural resources by consuming an additional 6,100 tons of used tires and 23,300 tons of wood and agricultural waste.
