The Kenneth Gray Federal Building and US Courthouse in Benton, IL, is the home to offices of the US District Courts, the US Bankruptcy Courts, the US Marshall Service, and the General Services Administration (GSA). This two-story building was constructed in 1959 and is owned and operated by GSA.
Since its construction, energy-efficiency measures have been implemented to meet mandated reduction goals and to reduce operating expenses. The systems of the building are continually monitored and adjusted by an Energy Management System (EMS) to provide optimum operation. Energy-efficient products are incorporated into any modifications. The building uses several small boilers instead of one or two larger units, which allows for increased flexibility in satisfying varying heat loads. Other upgrades that contributed to the building achieving the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings include a new cooling system, lighting retrofits, Variable Frequency Drives, and different chiller configurations.
"The current efficiencies enjoyed at the labeled buildings in our region are the result of over 15 years worth of examination, evaluation, and implementation of energy saving philosophies and ideas. When considering equipment replacements, we encourage thinking outside of the box. It is this thinking that has resulted in some unique equipment applications that have proven to be beneficial in reducing both energy and maintenance costs."
Bruce Wagner, GSA
The awarding of the ENERGY STAR Label is a reflection of the efforts of maintenance and property management staff to reduce energy consumption while maintaining a comfortable work environment for tenants.
