Facilities on the main campus of Mercy Medical Center have evolved over a number of years beginning with the construction of the A and C wings in the 1950s, the main building and Mercy Hall in the 1960s, the B wing and the medical office building in the 1980s, the surgery center in the 1990s and, most recently, the new state of the art intensive care unit (ICU) building in 2009. Over time, the older buildings have been adapted to meet hospital needs, including renovating and upgrading infrastructure with many energy-saving enhancements. The entire campus is approximately one million square feet.
The move to energy efficiency began in the early 1990s in preparation for the construction of the surgery center. At that time, deficiencies in the campus's cooling plant, emergency generator capacity, and electrical distribution capacity and redundancy were identified. These issues were addressed with a $5 million project in 1993 that included the following:
Since that project, the energy management team has expanded the use and capabilities of the building automation system to include:
Managing electric demand in real time via a gateway is tied into the Siemens electrical switchgear. If additional chillers are needed, they are programmed to load over time, which in turn has lowered demand charges.
Other key energy-saving enhancements undertaken since 1993 include:
After gradually building a green reputation through news releases and media coverage, Mercy held an ENERGY STAR award ceremony and invited the media to attend. Following the event, Mercy sent out a news release, promoted the award in its publications, and placed ENERGY STAR banners in strategic locations.
