building

Located at 400 Q Street in Sacramento, California, Lincoln Plaza East West is a four- and six-story, Class A office building. Although the facility appears to be two separate buildings above ground, it is connected by a two-level underground garage and shared utilities. In 2006, the building was added to the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) Lincoln Plaza Headquarters, which achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold BD+C: New Construction. In 2009, Lincoln Plaza East West received LEED Gold O+M: EB, and was recertified as LEED O+M: EB Platinum in 2014. Lincoln Plaza East West underwent ASHRAE Level 1 and 2 energy audits to identify and remedy potential problem areas relating to energy efficiency.

Energy Conservation
While the CalPERS Lincoln Plaza building square footage has increased by 65 percent since 2003, the total energy use per square foot has decreased by 35 percent.

Water Reduction
In response to the Governor’s 2014 emergency water reduction declaration, CalPERS implemented several water-saving measures. These measures included implementing landscaping improvements and installing a new system to capture recycled non-potable water from the cooling towers for irrigation purposes. After hours HVAC requests have also been restricted to conserve cooling tower water. These measures resulted in a 30 percent reduction in water use from January through December 2014 (nearly 10 million gallons) compared to water usage in 2013 for the same months.

Data Center
In September 2013, CalPERS was recognized for its Data Center Energy Conservation Project at the Sustainable Business of the Year Award Ceremony in Sacramento. Awards included recognition by the Business Environmental Resource Center, Certificate of Appreciation from Congresswomen Doris Matsui, Certificate of Recognition from Assemblyman Richard Pan, Certificate of Recognition from Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg, and a Resolution from the County of Sacramento Board of Supervisors.

Climate Action Leadership
CalPERS is recognized as a Climate Action Leader by the Climate Registry for its commitment to validate greenhouse gas emissions through third-party auditing. CalPERS has participated in the Climate Action Registry since 2006.

Renewable Energy
CalPERS purchases environmentally preferable renewable energy credits, which have a reduced effect on the environment when compared with other products that serve the same purpose.
