Located in beautiful Grand Junction, Colorado, Grand Junction High School was constructed in 1956. In the fall of 2009, the school underwent $1,000,000 in HVAC retrofits. The scope included the replacement of the existing steam boiler plant, a chiller replacement for the auditorium, new HVAC units for the main gymnasium, direct digital controls (DDCs), and variable frequency drives on the fans. These HVAC system upgrades have improved occupant comfort tremendously, as reliable heating and air conditioning systems are a must given the extremes of Grand Junction?s local climate. The use of override switches and more conservative occupancy scheduling using the DDC system helped Grand Junction High School earn the ENERGY STAR. Grand Junction HS also underwent a complete lighting retrofit as part of Phase I of an energy performance contract. Since partnering with ENERGY STAR in 2007, Grand Junction?s ENERGY STAR energy performance score has improved by more than 50 points.
Mesa County Valley School District 51 made the decision to improve energy efficiency and reduce utility costs a decade ago. Operating buildings with an eye on energy efficiency satisfies the district?s strategic goal to use resources efficiently and effectively. The district avoided more than $1,000,000 in utility costs in 2010. The saved funds are invested back into the district?s buildings and infrastructure, ensuring a safe working and learning environment for all students, teachers, and staff members.
