The
Missouri Department of Conservation protects and manages the fish,
forest, and wildlife and provides an opportunity for all citizens to
use, enjoy, and learn about these resources. The Northeast Regional
Office in Kirksville was built in 2006 and houses our regional staff
and provides a public meeting room for community programs like
hunter safety courses.
We designed this 20,125-square-foot office to be energy
efficient by incorporating technologies such as: a ground coupled
heat pump system for the HVAC system, daylighting with dimmable T8
lighting, motion sensors to control the lighting and HVAC system,
CO2 sensors for demand controlled ventilation, outside
air energy recovery units, direct digital control (DDC) system for
the HVAC system, variable frequency drive fans (VFDs), and a highly
insulated structural insulated panel system.
During the first year of operation, the building was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter and had a below average ENERGY STAR score of 38.
We began a commissioning program that consisted primarily of adjusting supply air temperature setpoints, adjusting space temperature setpoints, reducing excessive amounts of outside air, and reducing simultaneous heating/cooling. This greatly increased occupant comfort and brought the ENERGY STAR score up to 70 the second year.
This was much better but still not adequate, so we added some additional heating and cooling boxes to the under floor air distribution system and added some additional wells for the ground coupled heat pump system. We now find the building to be very comfortable and the energy use is down 38 percent from the first year with an ENERGY STAR score of 79.
