The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) South Residence Hall, completed and opened in 2006, is located in Little Rock, Arkansas. The South Residence Hall includes 145 residence rooms, a dining area, and laundry facilities. The South Residence Hall was built to replace an aging 50-year-old dormitory; the new facility includes energy efficiency fixtures and modern technologies that were not available in the 1950s, such as internet access and cable television for all residences. The South Residence Hall is a 62,445-square-foot facility.

The ENERGY STAR energy performance score for the Residence Halls is 79 and is a result of the following initiatives.

--Lighting: Upgraded to efficienct T-8, T-5 and Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) fixtures in place of incandescant fixtures. Our exit signs are LED, and our mechanical rooms have light switches with timers to turn off the lights after a period of time.

--Energy Management: We have a progressive on-going commissioning and retro-commissioning process and an energy management system to provide feedback on its effectiveness. All of our fans and motors are energy efficient with variable frequency drives (VFDs). We also use glass with window tinting to decrease the solar and heat effects.

--New energy plant: One of our biggest energy saving initiatives is our central energy plant, which serves the South Residence Hall as a district energy plant. The new energy plant began serving the South Residence Hall in June of 2008. This new energy plant has a state-of-the-art heat pump-chiller system, which utilizes technology from the Middle East and was the first of its kind built in the United States. Additionally, new efficient cooling towers and VFDs accompanied the new energy plant. The energy plant also has diesel back-up generators capable of providing energy for 48 hours without the need to refuel. This energy plant is also under an OIS (Optional Interruption of Service) partnership with Entergy Arkansas. Under this partnership, the energy plant will remove itself from the local energy grid during peak times and be self-sufficient for its energy needs. In return for this partnership, Entergy provides significant discounts on the energy rates. The energy plant also provides hot water for use by residents and guests of our Residence Halls. This energy plant has provided significant energy reduction for both the Residence Halls and the entire UAMS campus.

--Low cost/No cost measures: Energy saving signs have been placed in the South Residence Hall for residences to encourage them to turn off lights and TVs when not in use, moderate thermostat settings, wash full loads of clothes and dishes, conserve water, use day-lighting over lights, and take other energy saving initiatives. These energy saving practices have also been addressed and encouraged during routine staff meetings.

Our project financing, initial investment, and implementation time all refer to the construction of the South Residence Hall, which includes the energy efficiency initiatives implemented in the design and construction.

Energy management for the South Residence Hall and the UAMS campus is assisted by TME, Inc., our energy consultants. TME provided great insight and planning for the energy reduction gained through the design and implementation of the new energy plant and other energy usage initiatives.
