Palmetto Elementary School opened in 1970 as a two-story high school with built up air handling units served by steam and chilled water coils. The building was converted to an elementary school, and in 1999 the mechanical system was converted to water source heat pumps with energy recovery units to pretreat outside air. The school has a robust direct digital control building automation system by Automated Logic Corporation. The school has 40 classrooms and sits on a 48-acre site in Palmetto. In 2013 the roof was replaced with a highly reflective roof, interior lighting was replaced with more efficient fluorescent fixtures, and exterior lighting was replaced with LED fixtures.
