In June 2009, Henderson County Public Schools initiated an energy conservation program, focusing on behavior modification, which has resulted in a system-wide decrease in energy usage. To date, the district has realized a 16 percent reduction. Regular energy audits score the schools on their energy conservation efforts and provide staff members with constant feedback.
Hillandale Elementary was designed and built in 2009 to LEED Gold standards. The building utilizes solar hot water and Solatube lighting in the main hallways and classrooms, in addition to a highly reflective roof, light shelves, occupancy sensors, and T-5 lighting.
