Scientific Instruments (SI) was founded in 1967 by aeronautical engineer Jack Hoey and physicist Gilbert Halverson. Coming from aerospace and academic backgrounds, they developed the first commercially available Germanium Resistance Thermometer (GRT) and supplied these devices for use on the Atlas rockets and the Apollo Lunar Program.
Today, Scientific Instruments Inc. is owned by wife Joan Hoey and owned and operated by Jack?s daughter, Leigh Ann Hoey. An ISO 9001:2008 company, SI is involved in the design and manufacture of cryogenic temperature sensors for laboratory, industrial and medical applications. Other product areas include temperature indicators and controllers, petrochemical tank gauging systems for liquid natural gas (LNG) storage tanks, LNG composition analyzer systems, and aircraft temperature probes, which are used on all Boeing and Airbus aircraft.

Scientific Instruments Inc. reduced its energy use through a variety of strategies, including:
-- Painting RX-700 ENERGY STAR white acrylic, solar reflective, cool-roof coating on roof and on top of AC units
-- Installing 25KW grid-tied, poly-crystal solar system with real-time monitoring
-- Installing weather stripping around exit doors
-- Replacing the two oldest AC units with 7.5-ton high efficiency units
-- Replacing all AC thermostats w/ programmable thermostats
-- Replacing all of the old inefficient supply and return grills with new high-flow grills for higher efficiency
-- Installing instantaneous tankless water heater in lunch room kitchen under sink
-- Replacing all inside fluorescent lighting, exit signs, and emergency lights with LED light bulbs
-- Replacing outside building and parking lot lights with 100,000-hour, highly efficient induction bulbs
Other environmentally and financially friendly measures include:
-- Replacing faucets and toilets with new, highly efficient water-saving plumbing fixtures
-- Implementing in-house recycling of plastic parts, bags, and bubble packing in addition to recycling pickup for cardboard, paper, and plastic
Communications:
EPA announced that Scientific Instruments Inc. is named Top Office Building and one of the top competitors overall in EPA?s 2011 ENERGY STAR National Building Competition. Scientific Instruments reduced its energy use by more than 42 percent with a savings of more than 51 percent on the electric bill while preventing more than 35 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
