The A.J. Ferlazzo Building, built in 1953, is located in Woodbridge, Virginia and originally encompassed approximately 58,000 square feet. The building has experienced some of the most extensive growth and renovations in Prince William County?s catalog of properties. The original structure served as Garfield Senior High School and saw four renovations, adding more than 64,000 square feet throughout its 19 years of service. After the high school moved in 1972, the building became home to Saunders Middle School through 1988. The Ferlazzo building was reopened in 1991 to serve the citizens of Prince William County and was occupied by the Social Services Department and the Community Services Board. It has continued to serve the citizens of Prince William County and expanded its services to include Taxpayer Services, two members of the Board of County Supervisors, and the Office of Criminal Justice Services. The Ferlazzo Building also contains an auditorium, gymnasium, and a cafe.
During required cyclical replacements of building systems, energy efficiency was the basis for choosing equipment. The roof structure is one of the more interesting features as it consists of varied construction types that were used on the different additions throughout the facility?s life. The foam roof was installed in 2005 directly over an existing built-up tar roof system and has shown a reduction in utility bills.
The HVAC system consists of a boiler loop run through both package units and a VAV system. The VAV system is primarily throughout the first floor and is on an energy management system. Package units control most of the second floor. They are controlled by individual programmable thermostats where temperatures are controlled and monitored. The Ferlazzo building is an excellent example of an older building that, through effective and efficient renovations, has managed to meet EPA standards and become one of the shining stars of energy efficiency.
