Located in beautiful Palisade, Colorado, Palisade High School was constructed in 1991. Before Mesa County Valley School District 51 partnered with ENERGY STAR in 2007, Palisade HS achieved an energy performance score of 43 in Portfolio Manager, EPA?s ENERGY STAR measurement and tracking tool. In May 2011, the school earned the ENERGY STAR with a score of 78. The District?s administrators committed to reducing energy use a decade ago, as operating buildings efficiently satisfies their strategic goal to use resources economically. The avoided utility costs are invested back into the district?s buildings, infrastructure, and systems, ensuring that they continue to provide safe working and learning environments for their students and teachers.
In the fall of 2010, the District completed $500,000 in HVAC retrofits at Palisade HS. Improvements included the replacement of 105 existing pneumatic variable air volume boxes with new variable air volume boxes, direct digital controls (DDCs), and variable frequency drives on fans. These HVAC system upgrades have improved occupant comfort tremendously, as reliable heating and air conditioning systems are a must in the extremes of Palisade?s local climate. Palisade HS also underwent a complete lighting retrofit as part of Phase I of an energy performance contract. These improvements helped Palisade High School earn the ENERGY STAR and saved the district over $1 million in utility costs for fiscal year 2010.
Communications:
Palisade High School?s ENERGY STAR certification was announced at a school board meeting in the fall of 2011 and the ENERGY STAR plaque was presented to the school principal a staff meeting. A local paper, Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, advertised this achievement to the community.
