Map It!
First Ward was constructed in 2003 as a three-story classroom facility, with the media center, cafeteria, and multipurpose area a single-floor wing with 93,230 square feet. It has a single air-cooled chiller, two asymmetrically sized condensing boilers, and indoor four-pipe air handling units.
The major walls of the three-story section run southeast to northwest. This allows for natural lighting of the classrooms. Sunshades were designed to prevent direct sunlight and heat penetration during the months when the sun is too intense. Lighting was designed with dual switching, utilizing four-bulb (T-8) fixtures, switched two bulbs, and two bulbs.
This facility's energy use has declined in all but one of the years it has been open. In 2009-10, the facility operated at 45,000 BTUs/square foot. This includes all electrical use. We continue to look for ways to improve energy efficiency even further.
