The academic course work and extracurricular activities offered at H.B. duPont Middle School address the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth of the students in a positive and supportive way.  To support this mission, Red Clay Consolidated School District completed a comprehensive strategic planning process to evaluate the existing and future needs that will help H.B. duPont, as well as other schools, best serve their students.  Educational and public communities worked together on this project to determine the renovations that would most benefit H.B. duPont Middle School.

Necessary improvements totaled more than 8 million dollars.  The projected costs fell into several broad categories:  1) additions and upgrades to the auditorium, science labs, and library spaces, and general ADA upgrades to the building; 2) renovations of the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems; 3) upgrades to the lighting and electrical systems, including technology, communications, and security systems; 4) repair and/or replacement of doors, interior finishes, and ceilings; 5) renovations to the plumbing system to meet current codes; and 6) miscellaneous site and environmental improvements.

An ENERGY STAR partner since 2007, the district followed ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management throughout the design and purchasing decisions for these major capital projects.  Data compiled through EPA's Portfolio Manager and its reports help verify that these improvements maximize the use of the school's energy resources.

* Share "Statement of Energy Performance:  Facility Summary" monthly with the school community
* Public articles in the local media and school newsletter and post them on the school's Web site
* Provide resources and data to teachers and students for use with class projects
* Present at faculty, parent and school board meetings
