The staff of Evan G. Shortlidge Academy works to provide a nurturing, stimulating environment for its students. To perpetuate Shortlidge's tradition of excellence, Red Clay Consolidated School District spent 18 months evaluating all of its schools to ensure they are equipped to provide the highest level of education. Existing and future educational needs were identified for Shortlidge and recommendations were made for improvements.

The assessment of Shortlidge Academy indicated that an investment of 3.5 million dollars in renovations was needed. This included work in the following areas: 1) renovations of the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems to provide a comfortable environment conducive to learning; 2) electrical renovations to support new systems; 3) fire sprinkler system upgrades; 4) plumbing renovations to meet current codes; 5) renovations to the library, including new materials and equipment; and 6) miscellaneous interior improvements.

ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management were followed throughout the design and procurement phases of these major capital projects. As a result, the school earned the ENERGY STAR in 2008 for superior energy efficiency. Data compiled through Portfolio Manager help school officials ensure that these improvements maximize the use of their energy resources.

  • Publish articles in the local media and school newsletter, and post information on the school's Web site.


  • Provide resources and data to teachers and students for use with class projects.

  • Present at faculty, parent, and school board meetings.
