Since 1966, Thomas McKean High School's mission has been to help students reach their potential by motivating them to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to become contributing citizens.  Red Clay Consolidated School District's comprehensive assessment, conducted with community input, evaluated all school facilities for existing conditions and future educational needs.  The assessment resulted in recommendations for extensive facility improvements and additions to Thomas McKean High School to continue supporting its mission.

The district invested 17 million dollars in McKean's renovations and additions.  Facility improvements to address concerns about the condition and functionality of systems focused on the following areas:  1) additional classrooms and renovations to upgrade the existing auditorium, science labs, library, kitchen, locker rooms, and gymnasium; 2) upgrade existing electrical systems; 3) renovations and upgrades of the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems; and  4) general facility improvements to the site and building.

ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management were followed throughout the design and purchasing decisions for these major capital projects.  Data compiled through Portfolio Manager help school officials ensure that these improvements maximize the use of their energy resources.

Communications:

o  Share the "Statement of Energy Performance: Facility Summary" from Portfolio Manager with the school community.
o  Publish articles in the local media and school newsletter, and post information on the school's Web site.
o  Provide resources and data to teachers and students for use with class projects.
o  Present at faculty, parent, and school board meetings.
