John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital, in Little Rock, Arkansas, has participated in a Department of Veterans Affairs energy-monitoring program for more than 20 years. The monitoring and reporting showed how Little Rock ranked in comparison with other VA facilities as an energy saver. During the past several years, plans were made and implemented to incorporate energy savings projects into the Little Rock facility using a variety of funding sources.

This 760,000 square foot facility undertook the following projects: replacing outdated ballasts with electronic ones, replacing inefficient lighting with T-8 lamps, replacing a chiller with a high-efficiency unit, replacing heat wheels with improved units, replacing exit lights with low-voltage LED fixtures, and installing a Direct Digital Control energy management system (EMS).

These projects, along with an ongoing program of energy monitoring and adapting HVAC control protocols through the EMS and an active maintenance program, contributed to significant improvements in the facility's energy savings.

"CAVHS is proud to be designated as a top energy performer among hospitals nationwide. Earning the ENERGY STAR for our facility means that our efforts to reduce energy use are helping conserve the nation's energy resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By implementing energy-saving practices and using energy-efficient equipment, we also save money-every month-on our utility bills."
-- Ray Lipin, Chief Engineer, Central Arkansas Veterans Health Care System
