The Lawton Federal Building & US Courthouse at Fifth Street & Avenue E, has been recognized as an attractive building twice fold. First, it was awarded a Beautification Award by the City of Lawton, OK, for its aesthetic landscaping. Second, it recently received the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings in recognition of its high energy efficiency.

The 24,900 square foot building, built in 1980, provides offices for a host of federal agencies and courts, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the US Army, the US Marshall Service, the Department of Veterans Administration, the General Services Administration (GSA), and US Magistrate courts. The building, which is located between Dallas and Oklahoma City, is the main federal presence in a 100-mile radius.

According to John Denning, the GSA building superintendent of the site, improving the energy efficiency of the building is an ongoing concern. "We're always looking at new ways to save energy costs," he says. "It's a continuing process." Among the building's energy efficiency retrofits are the installation of highly efficient T-8 fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts, and the installation of an Energy Management System (EMS) that tightly controls the energy use in the building.

The Lawton Federal Building & US Courthouse ranks in the top 10 percent of all commercial and governmental buildings across the nation in terms of energy efficiency. This concern for saving energy costs has also helped maintain the building's comfortable working environment. Good lighting and good climate control not only save money, they have also made for a more pleasing work environment. "Whenever we survey the tenants, the building scores very high in terms of being worker friendly," Denning says. Attention to detail has not only made the Lawton Federal Building & US Courthouse an attractive and comfortable place to work, it has also earned the building the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings.
