The Madison US Courthouse in Madison, WI, is among the most energy-efficient buildings in the nation, and it recently achieved the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings. The 86,000 square foot building contains offices for 88 Federal employees, all of whom are benefitting from energy efficiency retrofits and improvements that have made the building more comfortable and less costly to operate.

The facility, constructed in 1984 and administered by General Administration Services (GSA), provides offices and space for District and Bankruptcy Courts, the Probation Office, and the US Marshal Service. The GSA, like all Federal agencies, is required to cut energy costs as much as possible. The efforts at the Madison US Courthouse were so successful the building now ranks in the top 25 percent of commercial and governmental buildings across the nation in terms of energy efficiency.

A number of steps were taken to lower energy consumption and energy costs at the Courthouse. T-12 fluorescent lamps were replaced with highly efficient T-8 lamps with electronic ballasts. Compact fluorescent lamps, designed to fit into regular incandescent lamp fixtures, replaced standard 60-watt spotlights. Occupancy sensors were installed to turn off unneeded lights. Motors on air handling units were replaced with more efficient motors with variable frequency drives.

Richard Oswald of the GSA credits some of the energy efficiency success of the building to staff involvement. The federal government has a program - "I Suggest " - that rewards ideas to save the government money. Commitment to cutting back on the use of energy not only lowers energy costs, but it prevents some of the pollution caused by energy consumption. It is because of dedication of this caliber that the Madison US Courthouse has achieved the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings.
