North Middle School is a new 750-student facility that was Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR by Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects and Shrout Tate Wilson Engineers. After one year of occupancy, the facility performed as designed and has earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.

Hardin County Schools sought to build a spectacular new middle school that would not only be an "instructional showcase" for Kentucky, but also set an example for energy-efficient school facilities.

The HVAC system is a geothermal water source heat pump system that serves the majority of the building. The administration area is served by a variable refrigerant flow system. This design allows for minimal use of the geothermal system during the summer months, which in turn will save energy. The HVAC system is operated by a building automation system (BAS) that uses direct digital controls (DDCs). These controls are programmed with schedules that are coordinated with the occupancy of the building, allowing for the system to go into "set-back" parameters when the building is unoccupied.

Occupancy sensors and programmable relay panels control the lighting. Occupancy sensors were installed in classrooms and offices, while the programmable relay panels were installed in the larger areas including the media center, cafeteria, and gymnasium. The relays are scheduled on/off by the BAS and operate based on the occupancy of the building.

The domestic hot water system is controlled by the BAS. This ensures energy savings by shutting down the system when the building is unoccupied. The water heaters are wrapped in an insulation blanket to minimize heat loss.

Other design features include a high performance masonry building envelope, natural day lighting in academic areas and public spaces, and energy-efficient exterior window glazing.

"The architects at Sherman Carter Barnhart have heavily involved our middle school staff, district administration, and Board of Education in the planning of all aspects of the new North Middle School.  They have used this information to create a design that is a perfect fit for our unique school community.  Sherman Carter Barnhart is dedicated to making sure this school is truly 'our own'."
