Kohl's owns more than 400 ENERGY STAR labeled stores and maintains a rigorous approach to energy efficiency and sustainability. Beginning with the installation of building automation control systems in 1982, the company has a long history of focusing on energy efficiency to protect the environment and reduce operating expenses. The company joined ENERGY STAR as a partner in 1998 and has continued to increase its energy efficiency levels every year. These efforts are supported by an energy management team, established in 2007, and a corporate sustainability department, established in 2009.


To continue to improve its energy performance, Kohl's began looking to alternative energy sources to supplement its improvement efforts. Kohl's Pleasant Hill store was already eligible to earn the ENERGY STAR before solar panels were added, which ensured that the store's energy use was already relatively low. By adding on-site solar energy generation, the company minimized the remaining greenhouse gas emissions and raised its energy performance score from a 77 to a 92.  Currently, 62 of Kohl's ENERGY STAR labeled stores are equipped with on-site solar generation, which provide 20 to 50 percent of the stores' already-reduced energy demands, depending on geographic location.

Weekly environmental tips for associates and monthly environmental articles on Kohl's intranet site.
Quarterly articles in Kohl's internal ASSOCIATE magazine with 50,000 copies distributed to stores and distribution centers.
