Mercy Medical Center opened on March 16, 2008, replacing St. Mary's Hospital.  Located on a 350,000-square-foot campus, the new $145 million, 165-bed hospital is counted among the most technologically advanced hospitals in the United States and features a fully integrated electronic health record system. The hospital is part of the largest remote ICU network in the country--Mercy Safe Watch--and employs patient-safety technologies such as bar-coded medication disbursement.

The hospital was built with the intention of being a total healing environment. Elements of this design principle include hallways for patients and visitors separate from staff corridors in order to reduce noise, private patient rooms, use of natural light in public areas and patient rooms, artwork featuring Ozark scenery throughout the hospital, and a particular emphasis on our faith-based heritage through the chapel and other artwork. Mercy Medical Center was positioned on the site to protect a tree-lined bluff from any future expansion. In addition, the seventh floor of the hospital was completed as a shell for the addition of more beds if needed, and additional towers can be constructed at either end of the hospital to add more space without disturbing patients.

The goal of Mercy's Sustainability Project is to inspire change through stewardship by promoting environmentally friendly practices and giving co-workers the tools and knowledge they need to make these changes part of their daily lives at home and at work. Mercy recognizes that keeping our planet clean and maintaining our resources is vitally important to our future. To accomplish this, we need to foster greater sensitivity toward God's Earth through a deeper understanding of environmental issues and the choices we make.

Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas regularly communicates our environmental and energy conservation efforts and successes with physicians, co-workers, and volunteers through internal newsletters and Mercy Green Team representatives. Information about earning the ENERGY STAR for Mercy Medical Center was shared through those communication channels as well as with the larger Sisters of Mercy Health System, of which we are a part. Mercy also works with the local media to spread the word about our conservation efforts.

"We believe sustainability is a vital part of our ministry at Mercy. The commitment of our co-workers to this aspect of our culture has allowed us to achieve this goal. The stewardship of our environment today will provide an opportunity for future generations to enjoy God's creation for years to come."

-- George McFerron, Director of Facility Services, Mercy Medical Center
