The North Platte Federal Building, U.S. Post Office & Courthouse is a 3-story, multi-purpose facility in North Platte, NE. Primary tenants include the Judiciary, Department of Justice, and U.S. Postal Service.


The U.S. General Services Administration is dedicated to reducing energy consumption and continually improving the facility's energy performance. GSA upgraded the North Platte Federal Building's chiller units and installed new energy-efficient motors for cooling tower fans, chilled water pumps, hot water pumps, and condensing pumps. GSA also installed a new reflective roof and electric switchgear.


These and other energy improvements decreased the North Platte Federal Building's overall energy usage by 17.1 percent from its 2003 baseline figures. The facility also lowered utility bills and increased tenant comfort and satisfaction.


GSA's energy efforts in North Platte do not end with equipment upgrades. The building's facility operation specialist earned the Building Operator Certification, Level I from the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance. These certifications are awarded in more than 20 states to professionals who complete specific training objectives and demonstrate knowledge and skill in energy efficient building operations and equipment maintenance.


As for the future of energy efficiency in North Platte, planned equipment installations and upgrades include a new energy management control system, new water-saving restroom fixtures, new boilers, and a new cooling tower. Facility management will also alter property landscaping to include more native grasses and reduce watering. These and other projects will receive funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.


The federal government is the largest energy user in the United States. Operating federal buildings in accordance with ENERGY STAR building specifications shows GSA's commitment to leadership in energy efficiency.


GSA uses newsletters, posters, and meetings to inform tenants about energy-saving initiatives. Management also posts monthly energy usage reports in the building's common area.
