Built in 2002, OU Physicians' 185,065-square-foot building is the first medical office building in the state of Oklahoma to earn the ENERGY STAR. The building houses the clinical practice of the University Of Oklahoma College Of Medicine, as well as Oklahoma's largest physician group, which is dedicated to providing care to patients that is enhanced by a fundamental commitment to education and research.

With nearly 450 doctors, OU Physicians encompasses almost every adult and child specialty. Many OU Physicians have expertise in the management of complex conditions that is unavailable elsewhere in the state, region, or sometimes even the nation. Some have pioneered procedures or innovations in patient care that are world firsts.

The University Hospitals Trust invested approximately $80,000 for improving the energy efficiency of the OU Physicians Building. This money went toward upgrading the building automation system to better manage the HVAC equipment. The funding also provided upgrades for a new lighting control system, as well as installing a variable frequency drive (VFD) unit on the hot water heating system.

The energy manager reviews monthly records from all of the energy bills, researches future technologies, and searches for opportunities for savings. Keeping detailed spreadsheets allows the energy management team to track the building's energy use, ensuring it is maintaining its efficiency. By saving money on energy, it allows the organization to increase funding for the mission of the University Hospitals Authority--supporting research, education, and health care for Oklahoma.

Monthly newsletters from OU Medicine and the University Hospitals Authority allow the energy management team to communicate with their employers, board of directors, and community.

"I applaud our entire team of physicians, medical and support staff, and our building management team for their efforts to help us become an ENERGY STAR qualified building. Earning the ENERGY STAR reflects our commitment to doing our best to ensure operational cost savings through energy efficiency, as well as to help protect our environment for future generations."
