Built in 2006 and designed by Sherman Carter Barnhart, Royal Spring Middle School is a 2-story facility designed to be a community school. The design solution offers many features to strengthen the school's own community as well as the connection between the school and the community it serves.

Within the school, the building is organized into three small learning communities. Each learning community contains a student's core classes, as well as teacher and administrative workrooms. Creating the learning communities enhanced the school community by enabling students to spend 85 percent of their days within the same area. By doing this, students have a greater sense of participation and confidence, which supports them in achieving their full potential.

To promote a connection to the community it serves, shared public spaces are placed at the front of the school, which make the spaces easily accessible after hours. The school offers an adult education classroom suite with its own entrance so it can be used by the district's lifelong learners, as well as the cafeteria with a stage, acoustical treatments, and theatrical lighting to be used by the community to host speakers, meetings, and community performances. The media center also offers a community room to provide the public additional flexible, adaptable meeting space.

Energy efficiency aligns with the school's mission to be active in finding ways to reach out and benefit the community. The HVAC system for the building incorporates the use of geothermal water source heat pumps and a geothermal well field consisting of 590 wells. Individual heat pumps are provided for each space and are located on service platforms above the second floor corridors, along with various mechanical rooms throughout the building. Heat recovery makeup air units are located within these mechanical spaces to provide the proper amounts of outside air and to help regulate humidity throughout the building.

The fire protection system for the building consists of a wet pipe sprinkler system. Concealed heads are located throughout the building. Due to the size of the building, two sprinkler risers were necessary.

Domestic hot water for the building is provided by water-to-water heat pumps that are connected to the geothermal system. The water-to-water heat pumps are connected to storage tanks and, with the proper heat exchangers, the water-to-water units generate heat to provide domestic hot water. This configuration is used throughout the building.

The electrical and communications systems consist of creative lighting designs and energy-efficient classroom lighting utilizing T5 lamps. The building incorporates a wireless and wired data/voice network infrastructure, LCD classroom projector educational video systems infrastructure, a lobby LCD television audio/visual learning and information center, digital CCTV camera system, monitored audio and motion security system, a state-of-the-art intercom, digital clock and fire alarm systems, TVSS-protected electrical power distribution system, and emergency power provided by a fuel oil-fired generator. The generator was designed to power the entire administration area, cafeteria, and portions of the kitchen in the event of an emergency.
