The Version 1.0 ENERGY STAR UPS specification was finalized on May 10, 2012 and shall take effect on August 1, 2012. Materials related to the development process are provided below. Stakeholders with questions may contact ups@energystar.gov.
EPA has released the Revised Version 1.0 ENERGY STAR Program Requirements for UPSs, which include a clarification relating to Diesel Rotary UPSs (DRUPS), requiring the demonstration of compliance with the Clean Air Act for models sold in the United States. This revision was proposed in a memo to stakeholders distributed on June 25; this proposal was further revised based on stakeholder comments, resulting in the version available at the links below.
EPA proposed a minor addition to the requirements for diesel-rotary UPS (DRUPS) systems under the UPS V1.0 specification. Please see the memo below for more details. EPA welcomes stakeholders to submit written comment on the proposal to UPS@energystar.gov by Wednesday, July 11, 2012.
EPA released a draft of the ENERGY STAR Version 1.0 Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Power and Performance Data Sheet (PPDS) electronic product comparison tool (interactive "widget") on April 18, 2012. EPA is currently reviewing stakeholder feedback and continuing to develop the PPDS for release in summer 2012. Stakeholders will continue to receive notifications on the progress of the PPDS as well as related items for review in the coming months.
EPA and DOE released the ENERGY STAR Final Draft UPS specification and test method along with accompanying documents for stakeholder review. Stakeholders are invited to submit comments to the EPA via email to UPS@energystar.gov by Tuesday, April 24, 2012.
EPA and DOE hosted a webinar to present the documents published on February 3, namely the Updated Draft Test Method and proposed changes for inclusion in the Final Draft Specification. EPA sent out a letter to stakeholders summarizing the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) test results that have been added to the ENERGY STAR dataset by manufacturers during the recently concluded Phase 1 of dataset assembly. With this letter, EPA also signaled the beginning of Phase 2 and will be working with manufacturers to coordinate the priorities for Phase 2 testing.
EPA has revised its proposed ENERGY STAR test method for UPSs, resulting in the Final Draft Test Method and accompanying documents. With the publication of the Final Draft Test Method, EPA begins assembling data for use in specification development.
To address stakeholder concern regarding testing time, EPA will be splitting the dataset assembly period into two phases. In Phase 1, manufacturers are encouraged to submit existing test data (collected according to draft versions of IEC 62040–3) to ups@energystar.gov by January 15. Analysis of this data will guide Phase 2: new testing according to the Final Draft Test Method.

EPA sent a letter to stakeholders to update them on recent progress in the specification development process for Uninterruptible Power Supplies and provide a timeline of next steps. A summary of stakeholder comments received in response to the Specification Framework was also attached.
