Aim for 80 Resources

Aim for 80 challenges architects and engineers (A/E) to deliver design projects that achieve the EPA’s Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR recognition.
In August 2024, the minimum ENERGY STAR design score for achieving Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR recognition was raised to 80* for all commercial new construction and major renovation projects.
The score change was implemented to push design teams to consider strategies and technologies that increase energy efficiency and reduce onsite emissions. Once these buildings are constructed and operating, it positions building owners to earn ENERGY STAR certification and meet energy performance goals.

Aligning Energy Design Targets With Operational Energy Performance Goals
New buildings become existing buildings as soon as occupants move in and start using energy. ENERGY STAR tools helpfully use the same algorithms to generate a score for a design project as they do for an existing building.
Explore resources to ensure that your design projects are on track to achieve superior energy performance once the building is constructed and occupied.
*Note: The score change to 80 for Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR recognition doesn’t apply to certification for existing buildings, industrial plants, or multifamily new construction projects.
