Sample Letter to Executives

I’m pleased to share that [BuildingName] has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® NextGen™ certification. This national recognition identifies the country’s most energy-efficient buildings. [This is the Xth year that we have earned the ENERGY STAR at BuildingName, representing our sustained commitment to environmental protection and energy performance.]

ENERGY STAR is the national symbol for energy efficiency. Studies have shown that ENERGY STAR certified buildings:

  • Have lower operating costs and increased asset value.
  • Are more marketable and command higher rental rates.

This recognition represents the diligent work of our energy management team to save money and reduce operating costs through industry best practices and careful attention to energy performance each month. I’m very proud of our company-wide commitment to sustainability. Thank you for your continued support for our energy management program and personnel.

How to Talk About ENERGY STAR versus NextGen

ENERGY STAR NextGen certification (launched in 2024) builds on the popular ENERGY STAR certification (launched in 1999). NextGen certification carries all the benefits inherent to ENERGY STAR certification. 

Here's an example of how to talk about the two together. A building that has earned ENERGY STAR certification three times and ENERGY STAR NextGen certification one time can describe itself in any of the following ways:

  • “We've been ENERGY STAR-certified four times.”
  • “We've been ENERGY STAR-certified three times and ENERGY STAR NextGen-certified one time.”
  • “This is the 4th year that we have earned ENERGY STAR certification, and the first year that we have earned ENERGY STAR NextGen certification.”
  • “We just earned ENERGY STAR NextGen certification for the first time. Combined with our three prior ENERGY STAR certifications, we've been certified for four years.”

Which Logo to Use: ENERGY STAR or NextGen?

Buildings that have earned ENERGY STAR NextGen certification may use either the ENERGY STAR NextGen certification mark or the traditional ENERGY STAR certification mark. Both marks were attached to your “Congratulations” email.
